Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail tracks.
The length of the railway tracks in Latvia is 2263.3 km of 1520 mm (Russian track width) and 33.4 km of 750 mm gauge at the site Gulbene - Aluksne.
Rail transport is characterized by:
- Relatively low costs;
- The ability to transport large quantities of goods;
- The ability to carry heavy loads;
- The efficiency and reliability of transportation;
- Sufficiently short time of delivery.
The goods are transported by rail in freight wagons. Freight car fleet consists of covered wagons, open wagons with side-boards, as well as flat wagons with and without stakes used, and specialized wagons.
- Universal cars can transport any goods;
- Special cars, only those goods which they are intended for;
- Specialized cars are designed for transportation of cargo.
Platforms
Platforms are used for the transportation of heavy, long cargo, containers, and other platforms. The latest edition of platforms is of capacity 70-72 tons.
To fasten/for securing platforms/ in order to secure platforms, they are equipped with front and side rack-mount brackets, and rings to secure cargo.
Large containers (10, 20, 30 tons) are mainly transported using 4-axle long-wheelbase platforms, equipped with special devices to install and fasten containers and trucks.
